  The European Patent Convention (EPC) has established a unified procedure for patent grants across Europe, aiming to create a consistent body of patent law that offers enhanced protection for inventions at a reduced cost. Under the EPC, patents can be centrally granted and opposed through the European Patent Office (EPO) for 39 contracting states, including EU and non-EU members. Upon grant, a European patent divides into national patents, each requiring individual validation and renewal fees. These national patents are enforceable independently within their respective jurisdictions, necessitating separate litigation and compliance with national laws for each.
